Any website with a vast amount of content and/or information benefits from having a categorization system to earmark content (of a single or multiple content types) in a semantic and easily sorted way. Drupal’s ‘Taxonomy’ system will be utilized throughout the website to organize a variety of content types throughout the entire site. It’s easy to remember that ‘taxonomies’ are really just categories, and ‘taxonomy terms’ are just items within that category. So, for instance, you might have a taxonomy of ‘Fruit’ and which contains taxonomy items of ‘Banana,’ ‘Apple,’ and ‘Orange.’
These taxonomies are then utilized by the website’s various content types to aid in correctly labelling and sorting the content.
Adding a New Taxonomy Terms to an Existing Taxonomy
- To add a term to an existing taxonomy, select ‘Structure’ -> ‘Taxonomy’ from the Drupal admin bar. This will open the library of taxonomies. You can see the existing terms by clicking on ‘list items’ or add a new term by clicking ‘add terms.’
- When you add a new taxonomy term, you will be asked to provide a ‘Name’ and ‘Description.’ The name is the term itself and will be used both for administrative purposes and displayed publicly, so please ensure that the chosen wording/term is appropriate and easy-to-understand. The description is not necessary.
- Once you have saved your taxonomy item (by clicking ‘Save’ at the bottom of the page), the new item will automatically appear in the appropriate areas throughout the website. When you save a new taxonomy term, you will be redirected back to the same page, allowing you to add multiple taxonomy terms one-after-another.
Please Note: The ‘edit vocabulary’ button contains information that is integral to the overall structure of the website and should not be altered for any of the taxonomies.
Editing an Existing Taxonomy Term
You can edit a taxonomy term by navigating to the ‘list terms’ page for the appropriate taxonomy and then clicking ‘edit’ next to the item you would like to edit. On the following page, rename the item and then click ‘Save.’ The change will automatically be applied to all areas of the website.
Removing a Taxonomy Term
You can delete a taxonomy term by navigating to the ‘list terms’ page for the appropriate taxonomy and then clicking ‘edit’ next to the item you would like to delete. On the following page, you can delete the item by clicking the ‘delete’ button at the bottom of the page.
Please Note: Many pages/sections of the website utilize pre-existing taxonomies and taxonomy terms using Drupal ‘views.’ These views are used to dynamically display content based on a variety of different categorization tools, including taxonomies. Changing or deleting an existing taxonomy or taxonomy term can negatively affect these views and break the website. Please change or delete taxonomies and taxonomy terms with extreme caution, or, if you are unsure about whether it is safe to do so, please contact your Upanup account manager.
