There are many types of links that are possible to include within your website. These links are input in slightly different ways depending on what you wish to do. We will discuss each type of link and how to create it below.
Creating a Link to a Document
To begin, highlight the text you would like to link, then click on the link button in the WYSIWYG editor.
Option 1: Use the autocomplete field, begin typing the name of your document, click the suggestion in the dropdown when it appears.
Option 2: Click the Media Library button to browse all uploaded documents. Select the document and click the Insert Selected button at the bottom right.
Be sure to click Save in the Add Link popup to apply the link and close the popup.
Creating a Link to a Webpage
To begin, highlight the text you would like to link then click on the Link button in the WYSIWYG editor.
- If linking content to an external website, the entire address, including “https://” or “http://” should be used.
- If linking content to another page within your website, it is very important to only use the part of the address starting with the first ‘/’. For example, to link to the Contact page you would use /about-us/contact. You can also start typing the title of the page and click the suggestion in the dropdown and it will automatically add the address path.
Be sure to click Save in the Add Link popup to apply the link and close the popup.
Advanced Link Creation
When adding a link (selecting the chain icon in the WYSIWYG) include your link in the URL field. (You can link to an internal page or external page by pasting the full URL.)
- Open up the “advanced” option in this pop-up window
- Select the checkbox option to open the link in a new window/tab
- Save
Linking to an E-Mail Address
Type the e-mail address (or person’s name), and highlight the text. Click the link icon and then enter the appropriate e-mail address, preceded by “mailto:“. Be sure to click Save when you are finished adding the link.
Creating Buttons
- To begin, create a link by following one of the options listed above.
- Highlight the link, click the Style dropdown and select Button.
- To change the button back to a regular link, highlight the button and re-select Button or Button Emphasis within the Style dropdown.
Important Notes
- Do not apply underlines to links, as it deteriorates the readability of text. The link text will display an underline when the visitor hovers over a link.
- Don’t use “click”, “click here” or “here” as the link text. Not everyone will be clicking, and it puts too much focus on mouse mechanics. The word “here” conceals what the users are clicking. When calling the user to action, use brief but meaningful link text that:
- It provides some information when the text is read out of context.
- Explains what the link offers.
- Doesn’t talk about (mouse) mechanics.
- Uses proper nouns rather than a verb phrase.
